Granules are used to coat asphalt shingles to protect them from the sun’s harmful rays, the elements and other outside dangers. Granule loss is common and unavoidable in asphalt shingles in many circumstances. But granule loss in asphalt shingle roofing systems should never be neglected.

 Sign for Roof Replacement

Why? According to a roof repair expert, It’s possible that granule loss is an indication of decay. In the face of the elements, asphalt shingles drop granules that weaken the protective coating on top of the asphalt. This layer of protection will eventually wear away, exposing the asphalt shingles on the roof and making it prone to leaks.

Common Causes of Granule Loss

  1. Shingles Damaged by Hail

As previously stated, it is quite likely that shingles will be damaged by severe weather, such as hailstorms. This will result in pitting and granule loss. It is possible that your roof will sustain considerable damage depending on the severity of the weather.

  1. Blisters

These might occur as a result of manufacturing faults or insufficient attic ventilation, among other reasons. When a person walks on these blisters, it can cause obvious defects such as granule loss on the surface.

  1. Traffic on the Roof

If someone walks on the shingles after a roof replacement, some granules may get separated from the shingles. Excessive foot traffic on your roof has caused bald spots to appear on it.

  1. Aging

This is one of the few reasons that can never be completely averted. The natural deterioration of roofs over time is inevitable owing to a variety of factors.

Is It Time to Replace Your Roof?

If you notice granule loss to the point that you can see bald areas on your asphalt shingles, it’s definitely time to consider replacing your roofing material altogether. If you can see through the shingles all the way to the shingle substrate, it’s probably time to replace the roof entirely.
